The next task was to put down new soil. The soil at the refuge is sand, so a few truckloads of better soil were bought and mixed in with compost by hand. The children would come home from school, change out of their uniforms and join in with mixing and distributing soil – even the smallest ones would fill and carry buckets all over the garden.
