Appeal for Aid for the Victims of the Earthquake in PeruAn earthquake that measured 7.9 degrees on the Richter scale hit central south coast Peru on Wednesday, 15th August at 6:40pm. With its epicentre 167km south west of Lima, the earthquake has caused devastation in the cities of Pisco, Chincha, Cañete and Ica and affected Lima, and other cities in the region. The death toll stands at 510 and there are over 1,500 wounded. Pisco itself has been reduced to the ground by approximately 70%. Currently there are close to 85,000 people left without homes and requiring shelter in the midst of a cold weather spell that is affecting Peru.In light of this terrible tragedy the Peruvian Embassy appeals to the solidarity of Peruvian and British nationals to help alleviate the extremely difficult situation of the affected population. For this purpose a special account has been opened for those wishing to make donations.
