Ingrid
Laubrock
Saxophones
Ingrid Laubrock was born in Stadtlohn, a small town in
Germany, in 1970. She started having music lessons as young as 4 years
old and began to play classical piano and sing in local choirs from
the age of eight. Her first recording experience dates from that time,
singing the solo voice in an arrangement for accapella choir on the
town's record. Throughout her childhood she performed in church choirs
and public concerts at the local music school.
In 1989 Ingrid left Germany for London where she took
up the Alto Saxophone. A year of studies with ex-Jazz Messenger Jean
Toussaint followed in 1992.
1993 she met singer Monica Vasconcelos and guitarist Ife
Tolentino, both from Sao Paulo in Brazil. Ingrid is one of the founder
members of the Brazilian quartet AS MENINAS, and also a long-time member
of Monica Vasconcelos' nine-piece band, NOIS.
She has recorded as a sideman with NOIS (2 albums, the
third one being on its way), with Matt Borgman's MEANDER , the Italian
electric violinist Roberto Manes (featuring Rory Gallagher), with Gil
Scott-Heron's bass player, Robbie Gordon , as co-leader with AS MENINAS,
and finally her own projects . Her debut album 'WHO
IS IT?' was released in 1998, to much critical acclaim. Her second
CD 'SOME TIMES' was recorded in January and released in May 2001.
In August 1998 and 1999, Ingrid took part in six-day
master-classes run by world-renowned saxophonist and educator David
Liebman, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
She was nominated as 'Rising Star of the Year' in the
British Jazz Awards for 1999.
Also in 1999 Ingrid completed the postgraduate jazz course
at the Guildhall School of Music &
Drama, passing with distinction. During that year she studied and
played with David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Cobham, Stan Sulzman
and Jean Toussaint.
AS MENINAS featured at the 'Holders Seasons International
Music Festival' in Barbados (March 2000), supported Brazilian pop-stars
Gilberto Gil at the Barbican Halls and Joyce at the Jazz Café.
The quartet has performed several times on Andy Kershaw's Radio
3 World Music Programme, the last time in a live broadcast from
the Jazz Café on 1st January 2001. In the summer of 2000 AS MENINAS
played a series of gigs, supporting rock singer Bryan
Ferry on his England tour.
Ingrid's latest album features tenor saxophonist Julian
Siegel, pianist Nikki Iles, trombonist Mark Bassey, and Byron Wallen
on trumpet and flugelhorn.
