Legacies
What can you leave to those who have had much less than
you?
Did you know?
"Only 4% of the population leave a charitable Will
and yet legacies raised £1.3 billion for charities in 2003" (Legacy MarketAudit, published by Legacy Foresight 2004)
Please don't forget to remember Project Peru in your
will. We are a very small charity with very low running costs. But we
are only able to carry out the work thanks to the generosity of our
supporters.
This is how YOU can help us to go on
helping Peru
Why you should make a will
It makes things easier for those minding your affairs after your
death. You can provide for family and friends. You can ensure that your
estate goes to the people you want. Causes dear to your heart can be
helped for many years. A will can keep alive the memory of your work
and interests.
And you can save on tax
Wills can reduce tax payments. For example, money left to grand-children
in a trust can reduce taxes. Legacies to charities are not subject to
Inheritance Tax. So, if you leave a legacy to charity which brings the
total value of your estate below the tax threshold, it will reduce the
amount of money that your estate will have to pay in taxes.
A legacy for Project Peru
A legacy to Project Peru will provide vital funding to help our
work.
What do I do next?
There are several forms of legacy. You should draw up your will
with expert advice, such as that of a solicitor or your bank manager.
If you are making a will . . .
If you are making a will, or decide to change your will, please
do not forget to remember Project Peru; or you may be asked to be the
executor of someone's will which leaves a donation to unspecified charities
There is little resistance to the idea of giving money
to charity in a will, but most people don't get round to it!
'Charities feature big in wills'
The majority of Brits want to leave money to charity
when they die, according to new research. Around 68 % want to put their favourite charity down in their will, according to research
conglomerate GfK NOP. Remember
A Charity commissioned the research into the nation's charitable
habits in order to help boost the income of the UK's charities through
legacy giving. The organisation says that £1.3 billion is raised
every year for charities through this method of giving. Over 66 % of
women said they would leave money to charity compared
to 59 per cent of men. Jonathan Parris, director of 'Remember a Charity',
said: "Allowing donors to provide for their family and friends
and to support the good causes they care about, including a charity,
also benefits the donor's estate with generous tax relief. And
yet, currently, only six per cent of the adult population include a
charity in their will. "This research highlights the public's
goodwill towards charities and recognises donations as the
most popular way to 'leave your mark' on the world.
With greater awareness around how easy it is to support your favourite
charity in this way and just what a difference it can make, we hope
to see this figure rise substantially over the coming years." [source:
